TSS RUGBY 2013

2012 was once again a massive year in the history of TSS Rugby. The 1st XV finished a very close 2nd in an exciting GPS Premiership, meaning that 10 out of the last 12 years, TSS has either won or come second in the 1st XV competition. On Home rounds the new Nathan Sharpe Grandstand swelled with boys and supporters alike and quickly it lead to the boys nicknaming our home ground, the ‘Shark Tank’. It became such a fortress this season that every TSS team to play at the Shark Tank was undefeated!

2012 was also a fantastic year due to the overwhelming successes of our TSS ‘Old Boys’.

Ben Tapuai (1st XV 06 & 07)  - received his first Wallaby Cap at the first Rugby Test held on the Gold Coast

James Slipper (1st XV 06 & 07) – Stan Pilecki medallist (Best & Fairest for the QLD REDS). Only the second ever prop to win the prestigious award.

Nathan Sharpe (1st XV 94 & 95) -  reinstated as Wallaby Captain for The Rugby Championship and Spring Tour as well as being named

- John Eales Medal Winner (Best & Fairest for Wallabies)

- become the most ‘capped’ Wallaby forward of all time. A fantastic year!

Ben, James and Nathan were also joined by fellow TSS Old Boy Wallabies Scott Higginbotham, Robert Simmons and Luke Morahan when the Wallabies again utilised the state of the art facilities here at TSS for a week long camp in the lead up to their match vs Argentina.

100 Years of TSS Rugby Celebrations...

The Southport School has a prestigious tradition for excellence on the Rugby field for 100 years. As a member of the Queensland GPS competition the boys of TSS compete at the highest level of schoolboy rugby each week.

Rugby is by far the most popular winter sport at the school with 22 teams in the Senior School and 12 teams in the Preparatory School. Approximately 450 boys are involved in the sport with many more participating in roles such as linesmen, ball boys and becoming qualified referees. With an aim to improve fitness, skill and overall enjoyment of the game of Rugby, the TSS Rugby Department has worked hard with coaches to develop a seamless program as the boys advance through the years.

Obviously the pinnacle of TSS Rugby is to be a member of the 1st XV Rugby team, and putting on the traditional 'red, white & blue' jersey of the 'Firsts' is a dream most boys at TSS have.

In recent years, The Southport School has had great success in the GPS Rugby. TSS has won the coverted GPS Rugby Premiership 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2010 and was second in both 1995, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2008, 2009 & 2012. In 2005 the 1st XV finished 2nd at the SANIX RUGBY WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS in Japan.

Indeed, TSS Rugby is a pathway to the professional level of the sport, giving many students the opportunity to represent their State and Country. For further information please contact the Director of Rugby - Mr Adrian Blundell .
