After a brief holiday, school has once again commenced with a very busy three weeks of term already completed. On the first Thursday back we had an ANZAC service outside at the Tobruk Cenotaph. This service was absolutely outstanding and very moving. The school was looking incredible and everyone showed their full respect for the diggers.  A particular tribute was made to the TSS Old Boys who had served in war through the Roll of Honour which was read by Daniel and myself on the day.

Last weekend bought about the start of the GPS season for Rugby, Football and Chess. On Thursday at assembly, a presentation of jerseys was made and then the school let out a bellowing war cry for all the boys, which were sure to fire them up. Afterwards we had a presentation made by the sharky boys which ignited the school with some serious spirit.  This was shown on Saturday through the loud cheers and support for the boys.

The day saw a lot of wins and some losses. All of the open teams came out with a win in the Rugby. The 5ths completely dominated their game with a 102-0 win although the main game on the day saw TSS with a 23-3 victory in the 1st XV. The Football had a loss in the 1st XI due to an unlucky own goal, however we were able to secure a commanding victory in the 2nd XI.

At the moment the Year 12’s are busy trying to finish their numerous assignments and juggle all of the school activities. Exams are coming up in four weeks so our heads are down and we are studying hard. Everyone is also looking forward to the formal at the end of term which is sure to be a great night.

What a first term we have had here at TSS. In what seems like a blink of an eye it has come to an end, and with so much going on, it’s been hard to keep up. However, as the term draws to a close, it is a fitting time to reflect on exactly what has been going on at the School.

The first GPS event of the season was the swimming. What a night this was! In true Southport style, TSS bought home the premiership cup and recorded some more fantastic individual results. The cheering on the night was absolutely spectacular and as a swimmer myself, I was blown away by the school spirit shown.

The week after the swimming, a truly valiant effort was recorded by the rowers. A commendable mention must go to the U/16 1st squad who won on the day. I was very impressed by the supporters who attended the event and cheered on the rowers, even though we spent more time on the bus than we did at Kawana.

The cricket season was quiet strong with some good wins and some close loses with a lot of lessons learnt for the years to come. With such a young team I’m sure that playing first grade was a new experience and with plenty of practice I’m sure that next season will be a very successful one. However, a commendable mention must go to the third XI who had a very outstanding season winning all but two of their games. As a result, they took home the premiership and had an amusing yet committed season. These guys are the perfect role models for those who just want to get in their and have a go.
The final weekend of the term saw the GPS sailors compete at Manly Dam in Brisbane. A good solid effort on the day saw the boys come a well deserved 3rd even without superstar Nick Peate. The debating season is also still underway, with only one loss to BGS.

Aside from sport at TSS, there is so much more going on at the school. The musicians are currently at a music camp. And coming up in the last week of term is the Round Square Shave for a cure and Fashion Parade in the chapel on Friday night which is sure to be a night of fun and excitement.

I must also praise the efforts of the Year 11’s and 12’s, as they have all put in a lot of work over the past two weeks of exams. A lot of sacrifices were made and a very good effort was put in by all. Also, this last of week of term has given the Year 12 cohort a chance to practice the QCS test. Everyone is putting in a really good effort considering it is the end of term and hopefully we will all be ready for the real test in third term.

All in all, I hope everyone has had a really good term and they have enjoyed it. Have a safe and relaxing holiday and I’ll see you all next term.

Hello everyone and welcome back to a new year at TSS. My name is Jackson Bailey and I am this year’s school captain.  I started at TSS in year 7 and since then have been involved in a wide range of activities. I quickly learnt that TSS has a great deal to offer however, I’ve always had a passion for swimming. I have swum at National level and currently I am a member of the Queensland Academy of Sport.

What a first two weeks we have had at TSS. Already we have seen the 1st XI win two out of their three matches, the 1st XIII rowers record top three performances, with the 2nds winning both their races, and the open debaters winning their first debate.  Also, the swim team is in full preparation with regular training sessions and weekly Friday night time trials with only three weeks left until the championships. With so much going on at the school I hope that everyone is getting involved in everything they can and giving it their best shot.

For me the past two weeks have been very busy trying to get into the swing of things. I’ve had to maintain my swimming commitments while still focusing on my academics.  As school captain, I have also been organising the formal, Valentines Day gifts, senior jerseys and sharky club.  All in all, I’m having a fantastic time being at this great place and waking up here each day is one of the best things I could think of doing. This year’s seniors are a great bunch of guys and I’m sure we are going to have a brilliant year together.

I’m convinced the next two months will fly by just as quickly as the last one has. I encourage everyone to come along and support the GPS swimming, rowing and debating.

I hope everyone has a great 2008 and I look forward to catching up soon.
