Boarding at TSS

Our philosophy of pastoral care is based on a ninety year-old House system.  The House system was introduced in 1909 with the establishment of Thorold, Delpratt and McKinley Houses.

Boarding has always been a tradition at TSS and recent upgrades provide some of the best boarding facilities in Australia. As well as our traditional intake from country areas we have boarders from all states and cities in Australia and international students from Asia, Europe, Middle East and the South Pacific.

There are five modern boarding houses on the TSS campus, each with their own Housemaster, Deputy Housemaster and female Matron.  Furthermore, each house also has a minimum of four boarding supervisors.

Full boarding, weekly or occasional boarding is available from Year 5 to Year 12.

Boys entering one of the Senior School’s Boarding Houses remain in the House for all their years at TSS. This allows them to form long lasting friendships, not only with boys their age, but also with both younger and older boys.

This system also ensures strong relationships are built between the resident staff and, the boys and their parents, encouraging a “home away from home” environment and open three way communication.

The resident staff in each House operate a roster system, which allows constant supervision and care for the boys.  This ensures each house has a Housemaster and an Assistant who can lead the Pastoral Care.  This is further enhanced by the availability of the School Chaplain, School Counsellor and the Dean of Students.

In addition, each Year group in each House has a Pastoral Care Teacher, who works as an advisor, providing guidance and direction for each student.  Once a week the Pastoral Care Teacher works on a number of different topics, with a focus on life skills such as Leadership, Self-Esteem, Careers and Anti-Bulling strategies, and other topics.

Weekend activities are coordinated for boarders. Such activities include, but not limited to, movies, outdoor activities, Sunday surf bus, and house birthday teas.

It is our top priority to ensure all students feel safe and secure in a family environment.
