Requirements for Duke of Edinburgh Award

There are various ways boys can involve their everyday use of the library in their quest for Duke of Edinburgh awards. Boys may use reading as a skill or perform community service in the library after school

Reading Boys may select reading as their skill.Bronze: Boys must agree to read on a regular basis over a period of at least two school terms. Titles of books read must be entered regularly into the boy’s Reading Record. There must be a minimum of five books read.Silver: Boys must read both regularly and widely over at least three terms (for those boys who achieved their Bronze award) or four terms (those who don’t have Bronze Award). Boys must keep an annotated list of titles read: including bibliographic details and plot summaries. These lists should be in a format that allows them to be used for display purposes in the library as part of the library reading programme. There must be a minimum of 10 books read.Gold: Boys must read from an agreed list of titles that are drawn from either a specific genre, time or geographical region. Boys will be required to keep detailed lists of reading and prepare this information for inclusion on the library homepage. Duration is either 12 months for those with the Silver Award) or 18 months (those without Silver Award).

Community service.Boys may achievtheir Bronze, Silver or Gold service component by performing a number of different tasks in support of the Library programme. These tasks may include printing paper collation, shelving and display of fiction material, preparation of overdue book lists, newspaper filing and new material preparation. A record is kept of times and tasks that boys complete.Duration: Bronze 15 hours over 3 monthsSilver 30 hours over 6 months

Gold 60 hours over 12 months
