About Thorold House

Thorold House is one of the oldest Houses at the Southport School, living in one of the newest buildings in the School. The building was completed in 1997 and offers students a very comfortable place to reside in whilst boarding. This House is one of twelve houses in the school and one of five boarding Houses. This house is not only strong academically, but is also feared by the other Houses when it comes to sport

The history of Thorold House

Thorold House is named after Charles Campbell Thorold, an early partner of Bishop Dixon in the establishment of the school.
Charles Thorold's life spanned the years 1873 to 1939. Charles Thorold received the "education of a gentleman" at Cambridge House School, Marlborough College and Worcester College (Oxford), where he took his Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in 1899. He then travelled for a year to study languages and then spent four years teaching in various schools in England including St.Edwards School, Oxford. After a period of time, Thorold emigrated to Australia in 1906 and brought his ideology the "Gentleman Ideal". The aim of Charles Thorold was to implant and nurture the "gentleman ideal" in Australia. Originally, Thorold had planned to study for Holy Orders, but registered as a secondary teacher in Victoria in 3/4/07 and later moved to Southport that year.

Charles Thorold erected a boarding house in February of 1908. This House was set up to accommodate around seventy boarders for about 300 pounds. Thorold received boarding and tuition fees for the boarders he accommodated.

In 1910, Reverend Horace Dixon, (The founder of this school) went into partnership with Charles Thorold for a one third partnership in profits and ownership of land, buildings and equipment which were valued at 6000 pounds.

In 1913, the partnership between Dixon and Thorold dissolved. Agreement with the Corporation of the Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane led Thorold to become senior master, with an annual salary of 400 pounds.

In 1918, Thorold was appointed as Headmaster of Hutchins School in Hobart, where he remained till 1929 where he was appointed as headmaster of Barker College in Sydney. In September 1932, Charles Campbell Thorold retired. After about a year break, Thorold came out of retirement and was transferred to Melbourne and conducted Mentone Grammar School till his death in 1939, at the age of 66.

Thorold's name has been commemorated in three Australian Schools

Thorold House - The Southport School
Thorold House - Hutchins School
Thorold Hall - Mentone Grammar
