The Awards at TSS

There has been a resurgence of interest in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards at TSS recently. Student interest and activity in these Awards at TSS is at the highest it has ever been in School to date.

This year has so far seen 36 TSS students achieve an award, which has included the 100th Gold Award achieved by a TSS participant.

The activities that TSS provides through its ‘usual’ experiences more than satisfies the requirements of the awards. Any students who undertake the expected TSS involvement in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities offered by the school can complete their award. Classroom activities cannot be used for D. of E. awards. The only extra commitment is to compile expedition logbooks and keep a regular record of involvement in activities.

The students who have successfully completed their Awards have developed and shown the following traits:

> They are self-motivated;
> They plan their activities well ahead;
> They are well organised;
> They persevere until their award is complete;
> They are willing to involve themselves in a wide variety of activities and experiences both within and outside TSS;

There are currently 200+ students enrolled in the Awards at TSS.

TSS students, both as current students and old boys, have earned 103 Gold, 224 Silver, 339 Bronze and 208 Bridge Awards since 1976.

In addition, over fifty students have joined the award this year and several students are currently planning expeditions in May and June or the next vacation. This suggests that many more students will attain an Award in 2006.
