Golf Program

Students at TSS are offered a unique opportunity to develop their golfing skills through coaching at The Southport Golf Club and practice sessions for boys who qualify for the intercollegiate squad. We are particularly keen to encourage beginning golfers or boys who have played occasionally socially who wish to refine their technique with a view to obtaining an official handicap.

All beginning golfers are encouraged to attend the Southport Golf Club's free Sunday clinics where they may hit balls on the range under the watchful eye of expert coaches.

Development Squad

Players who are selected for the development squad are those with handicaps less than 20 who wish to be selected for intercollegiate competition. They must be prepared to make themselves available for regular practice sessions (usually at Southport Golf Club) and develop a plan to improve their golf in conjunction with the Director of Golf.

Selection for Intercollegiate events is based on current handicap and form and commitment to the TSS program. In the event of two players of similar ability and form, a playoff over 18 holes will decide who plays.

Pathways to Golf

How can I start playing golf at TSS?

Golf is unlike most sports at TSS where we practice at school and there are teams for all levels of skills. Because we need a golf course to play on, Southport Golf Club is supporting us by allowing us to practice on their driving range and use their course. If you are just starting out to play golf and you are thinking of making golf your sport at TSS you will need to take the following steps:

1. Develop the fundamentals by attending Southport Golf Club’s Sunday morning clinics which start at 8am.

2. Further develop your skills by taking a series of lessons with a professional.

3. Join a golf club (most of our players are members at Southport) and obtain a handicap.

4. Once your handicap is around 20 and you wish to train with the TSS squad, see Mr Thomas who will confirm your eligibility.

5. You are then eligible to play Intercollegiate Golf. We play 4 rounds a year on Mondays in term time at various courses. Link to Queensland Intercollegiate Golf Association's Competition Calendar ....click here

6. Once your handicap reaches 7, you are eligible to qualify for a TSS Representative Blazer.
