The Southport School has a very proud history in sport on the Gold Coast. The School provides extensive first-class sporting facilities designed to provide a full range of activities for boys. Along with a reputation of providing excellent sporting facilities, the school is also known for its sporting excellence in coaching. Over the years, the School has helped produce many sporting champions through highly professional coaching, mentoring programs and access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. As a member of the Great Public Schools’ Association of Queensland (GPS of Qld), the School competes in a wide range of sports and activities.
The GPS competition includes sports and activities as well as “excellence” days.
In addition to the strong GPS program, the School boasts more than 50 co-curricular activities including rock climbing with a purpose-built wall, Karate, Boxball, Golf, Run Fit, and AFL. The Southport School also runs an extensive outdoor education program with activities such as kayaking, bush walking, multiple ropes courses and camp cooking, orienteering, touch football, mountain biking and hiking which are on offer to encourage and promote a lifelong love of a healthy and active lifestyle.
Nationally and internationally recognised programs such as Duke of Edinburgh, Army and Navy Cadets are also facilitated on site for interested students. Boys can also immerse themselves in structured community services programs which offer greater global understanding with opportunity for student exchanges.
The School also has innovative programs such as the Young Engineers Society, Speech and Variety, Days of Excellence and Drone Club which allow our students to expand their horizon through a wide variety of activities.

The high level and professionalism of sports coaching has allowed many talented boys to develop into regional, State, Australian and World Champions at both the competitive and coaching levels – including, Nathan Sharpe, Lloyd Johansson, Tom Lawton, Nathan Grey (Rugby – Aust. Wallabies), Richard Nyholt, Vitori Buatava (Fijian Rugby), Andrew Baildon, Greg Brough, Leigh McBean (Swimming), Chris Atkinson (WRC Rally Driver), Craig Hackett, Shannon Eckstein, Mark & Peter Raeburn, Hayden & Lawrence Reece (Surf Life Saving), Courtney Atkinson (Triathlon), Adam Scott (PGA Golf), Wally Fullerton-Smith, Peter Jackson, Clark Keating (AFL), Grant Davies (Canoeing), Duncan Free (Rowing), Mathew Belcher (Sailing), John Buchanan (Cricket) and Bernard Tomic (Tennis), some while still at The Southport School.
