Andrew Hawkins | Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School
The Headmaster, along with Mr Oliver Alini and Ms Jo Inglis, worked hard to bring to fruition the Academic 1st Team concept many years ago. The Academic 1st Assembly has now become a show piece, much the same as 1st Team Assemblies in Sport or Cultural activities. Last week the 2017 Team was presented by the Headmaster. Captain Robert McCollough, spoke extremely well at assembly and I particularly like his final paragraph that I have inserted below.
“We, as Year 12 students, are getting very close to the completion of our studies and are about to embark on the next part of our journey. In life, we have many different paths to follow, but given that we only have one life, it is important to give our all to the path on which we find ourselves. Although many hope to attend university, it is true that the lessons learnt here at The Southport School are applicable in whatever path you end up choosing. You may be hoping for a sporting scholarship, you may have an apprenticeship in mind, maybe a career in the armed forces, or perhaps you are looking forward to returning to the family property. Regardless, the thinking skills that you have learnt here, together with the brotherhood we share, will stay with you forever and help you to succeed wherever you find yourself.”
Robert’s speech reminded me of the diversity of students here at TSS. Whether you started in Reception, or like Tom Brown and Preston Degarnham who started at TSS this year in Year 12, there is a place for everyone here. While our Academic 1sts lead the way towards the Academic season and QCS Test for our Year 12s, I have to also acknowledge two seniors who have excelled recently outside the classroom. Max Osborn in Surman House Year 12 recently won a sliver medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games held in the Bahamas in the 1500m Freestyle for Swimming and Biddle House Year 12 Cormac Kennedy-Leverett recently won gold in the at the Junior Rowing World Championships Double Scull in Lithuania. Well done to Max and Cormac and good luck the Year 12 cohort for their upcoming academic season.
Congratulations to the following boys who were named in the Academic 1sts in 2017.
Thank-you to Mr Alini for his academic guidance and support of these and many other boys, throughout the year. On behalf of the TSS community we congratulate Oliver and his wife Katie who welcomed their daughter Lucinda May to the world last Sunday.
