Ms Jo Inglis – Head of Learning and Teaching
On Thursday of last week, TSS Senior School trialed the TSS online curriculum delivery model that was implemented on Wednesday March 24, when TSS classes moved to online delivery due to COVID-19.
Last Thursday’s Senior School Assembly required all students to access the Senior School Assembly 2020 Canvas course on their devices in their House groups with their House Mentor in Roll Call Rooms.
The Senior School Assembly 2020 Canvas course mirrored the features of the online curriculum delivery for each lesson; a clearly labelled lesson plan, link to lesson conference and further resources.
The further resources for the Assembly ‘lesson’ included links to two Head of the River 2020 videos and the Assembly ‘lesson’ was paused for students to complete Online Netiquette and Digital Citizenship Canvas course. Pausing of conferences will occur during online lessons, whilst students complete tasks as directed by their classroom teacher.
Whilst TSS has livestreamed assemblies and other events on many occasions, and will do so for Senior School Assembly from this Thursday March 26, the goal of using the proposed online curriculum delivery model to deliver Thursday’s assembly was to ensure all students and teachers understood and were familiar with the process and features of online lessons, ready for the move to online delivery.
The rationale, technical details, student requirements and pedagogical features of the TSS Senior School online curriculum delivery are elaborated upon on our dedicated COVID-19 webpage and the opportunity for teachers and students to experience a simulation of the model as one Senior School ‘class’ was invaluable to identify potential challenges and provide feedback.
Whilst the goal of ensuring all students and teachers being familiar and comfortable with the online model was achieved, the trial identified bandwidth limitations which have been addressed with a five-fold increase in resourcing to ensure all classes can run simultaneously. A further trial at the commencement of a lesson early this week confirmed that all students could simultaneously connect and engage in their timetabled conference and lesson, and importantly, that all teachers can confidently deliver their lessons in this mode.
I will take this opportunity to sincerely thank TSS Teachers for their willingness to learn this new mode of lesson delivery, whilst working in the delivery of their face-to-face classes and completing their usual load of preparation and correction. All TSS Senior School Teachers have also provided a summary of the work covered in their Term 1 Week 8 lessons (Mon16/3 to Fri20/3) on Canvas to assist Day and Boarding students who have been away from school during that time.
