Term 4, Week 7
Mr Leigh Holtsbaum – Housemaster
The end of year is near and the boys in Biddle have been very busy celebrating the Valedictorians this past week. With many functions including the Final Assembly, Valedictory Dinner and Graduation, it was an action packed week for our Graduating Seniors. It was fantastic to see all our Year 12 Valedictorians of Biddle House walk across the stage and become Old Boys last Friday on a spectacular day in the Centenary Centre.

All your hard work paid off and you are very deserving of the accolades you received. Additionally, the House was awarded the prize for having the best diligence average in the whole School – a fantastic reward for the effort these boys have put in all year and a great finish to 2019. Biddle House wishes the Valedictorians all the best of luck for whatever path you choose follow in the future.
The 2020 House and School leadership positions have been announced and were are very excited about the depth of leadership within Biddle House. Congratulations to:
Additionally the School’s leadership team is strongly comprised of Biddle boys with Foundation Wardens Hunter Houlahan and Cameron Vele (School Sacristan). Congratulations boys you will make a fine leadership team in 2020.
For all the Year 7-11 boys within the House we have seen a busy start to new academic units as the boys shifted in the next year level. All boys have starting working on new electives and content that will form a base for their learning in 2020 in all subjects. On the sports field many Biddle boys have been enjoying the preseason summer sports training. Boys have been out on the river rowing and sailing, in the pool swimming and in the nets for cricket. The football season has also started and many Biddle boys have been working hard with Mr Dolan in preseason.
Around the House the boys have also been active with many playing games of chess, others have been enjoying some fishing, and the cricket nets have been getting a work- out. During the graduation morning for the Year 12’s a fun tradition that was enjoyed was the Secret Santa. I was great to sit back and watch the fun unravel with some very funny and oddly interesting presents that were given to each other by the boys. All in good fun and great way to start the festive season.
I have been extremely proud of the House this year and everyone has put in. I am very much looking forward to the adventures that 2020 brings.
Finally, thank you to all the staff, parents and boys for being part of this great House in 2019, I wish all the Biddle House families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you all in 2020.
Housemaster, Leigh Holtsbaum
Our first year as a family in Biddle has been a great experience for us all coming into the TSS Boarding community.
The boys love to talk to Jozsef (Zsef) who is not at School yet so he is around the House a fair bit; Elis and Lana are a little more reserved but do have the odd conversation with the older boys!
My wife Laura has been amazed by how polite and considerate the boys have been to her and the children and enjoys popping down for a chat with Lorina and Yvonne most days while Zsef attacks the morning tea!
The support we received from Mr Holtsbaum, his family, Lorina and Yvonne has helped us settle in so easily, especially when Term 1 and 2 are so busy; I didn’t have a diary before I came to Biddle – but I do now as there is so much going on – all the time!
Highlight of the year for me probably has to go all the way back to Tug of War in Term 1; it was my first experience of real brotherhood and team spirit from Year 8-12 and the boys did so well to get to 2nd place!
In other House events our boys have also demonstrated a grace and pride when not finishing in the top positions, as joint House Captain Tom Watts would say, all he wanted was for “us to have a good crack” at whatever it was we did and the younger boys certainly took note.
Highlights include the trips to Top Golf with the older boys, the War Cries before House events and watching the boys work up a hunger at House touch before the BBQ on Wednesdays – it really shows what a positive culture can bring to young boys and their development.
There is always going to be ups and downs along the way and things are not always perfect in the House, but as a group, as a family, I believe all our boys are trying hard to be better people and to make a positive contribution to our community where they can.
Finally, I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the boys and their parents for making us feel part of the Biddle family from day one – it has been a great year for us and we are already looking forward to 2020 in THE best Boarding House in the world!
Assistant Housemaster, Mr Joe Dolan
Coming to the end of my second year at Biddle and it has been a great year getting to know your son’s and their differing personalities. Always a little poignant at this time of the year saying farewell to the Year 12’s but nice to know they are always welcome back to visit us at Biddle.
In the New Year we ask that the boys’ clothes are named properly to avoid the never ending stock pile of unnamed clothes. Also with the boys growing, please check for sizing especially their long pants and long sleeved shirts.
I wish you and your family a very happy and safe festive season.
All the best,
House Mum, Lorina Swindley
