Biddle House News

Mr Leigh Holtsbaum – Assistant Housemaster

The end of year is near and the boys in Biddle have been very busy celebrating the Valedictorians this past week. With many functions including the Final Assembly, Valedictory Dinner and Graduation, it was an action packed week for our Graduating Seniors.

It was fantastic to see all twenty Year 12 Valedictorians of Biddle House walk across the stage and become Old Boys last Friday on a spectacular day. A massive congratulations to the Academic Prize winners; Justin Brunskill who was awarded the K.I. & J.W. Hong International Student of the Year Award, Matty Robinson who was awarded the Year 12 Hunt Prize for Chinese and Harry Cox awarded Dean’s List, Silver Palm, Sports Honour Award and the Thelander Shield. All your hard work paid off and you are very deserving of the accolades you received. Biddle House wishes the Valedictorians all the best of luck for whatever path you choose follow in the future.

Additionally the 2019 House and School leadership positions have been announced and we are very excited about the depth of leadership within Biddle House. Congratulations to Harry Blok and Tom Watts – joint House Captains, Wilson Blyth and Charlie Cox – joint House Vice-Captains, Lachlan Christie-Adams – House Sports Captain and Max Lambie – House Sacristan. Additionally the schools leadership team is strongly comprised of Biddle boys. The Foundation Wardens are Wilson Blyth, Lachlan Christie-Adams and Charlie Cox (Head Warden) and Foundation Prefects are Harry Blok (School Vice-Captain) and Tom Watts (Head Boarder). Congratulations boys you will make a fine leadership team in 2019.

For the other boys within the House we have seen a busy start to new academic units as the boys shifted in the next year level. All boys have starting working on new electives and content that will form a base for their learning in 2019 in all subjects. On the sports field many Biddle boys have been enjoying the preseason summer sports training. Boys have been out on the Nerang River rowing and sailing, in the pool swimming and in the nets for cricket. The football season has also started and many Biddle boys will be going on tour to Melbourne over the Christmas holidays. Well done to Harry Blok, Charlie Blok, Max Lambie and Kuba O’Grady for your selections and good luck for the tour.

Around the House the boys have also been active with many playing the skillful game of chess, successfully beating many a Master on duty (Mr Pook). Others have been enjoying some fishing, Cricket and also keeping the house touch football tradition alive. Another fun tradition that was enjoyed in the senior’s final week was the Secret Santa morning. I was great to sit back and watch the fun unravel with some very funny and oddly interesting presents that were given to each other by the boys. All in good fun and great way to start the festive season.

Next week we will farewell and thank Mr Nick Stansbie as Housemaster of Biddle House. Over the past three years Mr Stansbie has worked tirelessly to ensure that the boys of Biddle House have been cared for and all the boys felt at ease in their home away from home. The comments made by many of the Valedictorians were a tribute to the caring nature and genuine relationships that he has developed with the boys in the House over his time as Housemaster. We wish him the best of luck as he focuses on his new role as Dean of Students in 2019.

Finally, thank you to all the staff, parents and boys for being part of this great House in 2018, I wish all the Biddle House families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you all in 2019.
