MENS Health Week 2021
Miss Caitlin Anderson – Wellbeing Health Promotion Officer
Did you know that Australia has one of the highest melanoma rates in the world, with one person diagnosed with the disease every 30 minutes? Sadly, it is the most common cancer affecting 15-39 year old Australians, with twice as many men dying from melanoma than women. While most people believe that skin cancer is a higher risk to older Australians, the reality is that it can occur at any age. Anyone can get skin cancer. In fact, high sun exposure in the first 10 years of life more than doubles your risk of developing melanoma at some point.
As Queenslanders, we are exposed to high levels of UV radiation all year round, with the UV rising above 3 from as early as 8am – even during the winter months.
The good news is that we can prevent melanoma by practising the five sun safety strategies of slip, slop, slap, seek and slide.
Slip on protective clothing
Slop on SPF30+ sunscreen. Reapply every two hours.
Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
Slide on wrap-around sunglasses
We encourage you to continue the conversation at home by discussing these strategies prior to your next outdoor family outing.
Crazy Hat Day – Thursday 17th June
To further promote our MENS Health Week Sun Safety message, we will be hosting a Crazy Hat Day next Thursday 17th June. We encourage all Prep students to bring in a crazy, wide-brimmed hat to wear during break time. Some exmaples include a sombrero, pirate hat, cowboy hat, etc. Our school mascot, Sharkie, will be walking around with the Wellbeing Health Team handing out SPF50+ sunscreen samples to all students that are fiercely practising sun safety.
Additionally, the SunSmart app is a free sun safety app that helps you to check the UV rating for the day, as well as helping you plan your sun safety measures based on what you’re wearing e.g., if your arms are exposed it will increase the amount of sunscreen that you need to apply.
Together, we can prevent skin cancer.
