Da Vinci Decathlon Success!

Ms Jasna Poeszus – Gifted and Talented Programs Coordinator, Preschool – Year 6

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the world’s greatest thinkers and scholars. Da Vinci demonstrated an ability to perceive the interconnected nature of knowledge and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to uncover the unknown.

The QLD Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students between year 5 and year 10.

Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: Ideation, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, philosophy, creative producers, cartography and general knowledge.

The Decathlon competition places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills, problem solving and creativity. This year there were 1376 students (172 teams) competing over the 3 days of competition from all over Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba and Redland City. TSS Prep entered two teams, one year 5 and one year 6 a total of 15 highly capable most enthusiastic boys.

They demonstrated collaborative and cooperative teamwork under time pressure, discipline, persistence in the face of some extremely difficult tasks and most importantly sheer determination to give it their best. Their efforts were rewarded:

  • Year 5 team came 2nd in English and Code breaking.
  • Year 6 came 2nd in Cartography.

I congratulate them for their enthusiastic spirit through the entire process and look forward to them competing again in 2018.
