Mr Tony Watt – Dean of Boarding
The commencement of the new boarding year has certainly been one to remember! The boys have settled into the boarding year extremely well, actively participating in the life of the School. The vast majority of boarders are representing their school in weekend sport and are participating in House events such as the early morning cross-country run. The recent norovirus outbreak tested the logistical and staffing capabilities of TSS but through the professionalism and competent staff- all affected boys were isolated and treated with great care. My personal thanks is extended to all staff of our Health Centre who worked tirelessly in ensuring the outbreak was effectively managed. At this point in time, we have a handful of boys still affected by the virus. Queensland Health has confirmed the outbreak was not food poisoning, but rather the highly contagious Norovirus which even has air-borne capabilities. It was the most interesting start to a boarding year I have encountered in two decades.
For new parents of TSS, the Boarding Bulletin is a fortnightly newsletter that contains valuable information for the TSS boarding community. We have rolled out a number of initiatives in 2018 to support our boarders across all facets of our program. Some of these include:
The boys have been vocal in expressing their approval of the new food offering. Across the board, there has been a notable and measurable improvement in quality and variety. The new ‘stations’ on offer have been well received by both boys and staff. We will be introducing a weekly summary of the breakfast, lunch and dinner to our community through a video providing a visual snapshot of the week’s culinary offerings. Furthermore, we are trialling a Year 12 Bachelor Cooking session that commence this Friday.
Building upon last year’s work, we have engaged A Team tutoring in providing six tutors each for Year 7 and 8 students on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. These sessions aim to provide boys in the earlier years appropriate scaffolding and structure to plan and organise their academic studies. The sessions are also interactive in nature where the boys form a positive rapport with a mentor.
TSS Dean of Students, Mr Karel Bos, has coordinated and led, with the assistance of key wellbeing staff, a program designed to assist boarders adapt and plan for their boarding year. This program encompasses academic domains as well as personal and health issues. TSS boarding is blessed to have Mr Bos remain an active contributor to the boarding community. You can follow Karel’s sessions by visiting his section below.
