Dean’s List Assembly and Leadership

From the Headmaster – Mr Andrew Hawkins

Boys on both campuses have embraced the routine of the school week as we settle in to Week 3. It was wonderful to see so many boys in Years 8 to 12 at last week’s senior school assembly receive Dean’s List certificates, Scholar’s Ties, Silver Palms or Gold Palms from their academic endeavors in 2020. A highlight of the Senior School Assembly was being tasked to announce the Captain of Cricket, Jack Sinfield, Captain of Swimming, Jack Coffey and the President of the Debating Society, Saxon Gemeri for 2021. The Captain of Boats, Lachie McTaggart, was announced in Term Four, 2020. It was worth acknowledging that all three boys announced this year were also on the Dean’s List. These three leaders epitomise what it means to balance co-curricular activities the with the core business of their purpose here at TSS – academics. A great example for all boys here at TSS.

Again, we acknowledge the parent body for your understanding and patience as we navigate through the Queensland Health, Independent Schools Queensland, the GPS, and Education Queensland restrictions on attendance at sporting events and school-based activities like assemblies. The Senior School Dean’s List Assembly is yet another example of proud parents not being able to see their sons receive these special awards. It is our hope that we can now start responsibly allowing attendance to various events. Major events such as the GPS Music Showcase this Thursday in Brisbane, Rowing Regattas, GPS 5-12 Swimming, Prep and Senior Assemblies, P & F Welcome functions and GPS Sailing will be advertising to parents individually our requirements as spectators and/or attendees.

While we have a busy GPS calendar at TSS there are many boys who compete externally in various activities. A great example of this is Pierre van der Westhuyzen, our Year 12 Turnock House Captain, who is currently away competing at the Queensland Kayak Championships on the Sunshine Coast. We received the amazing news this week that he won six gold medals in the Under 18 category – K1 1000/500/200, K2 1000/500 and K4 – 500. Congratulations Pierre on this incredible achievement.

A busy week for the Prep Staff and boys in Years 4, 5 and 6 who are participating in their camps at various locations across South East Queensland. We wish them all a safe and enjoyable week learning outside of the classroom.
