Dean’s List Assembly

Mr Andrew Hawkins – Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

As this is the Headmaster’s last year at TSS before he retires, it’s hard not become a little nostalgic and begin to reflect on his 17-year tenure. The Bennett Building that now houses our Year 7 cohort, the Sheil Building with the Arch of the Good Shepherd and the Palm of Victory Arch, the Preparatory Hall and The Broomhead Lecture Theatre with the Library extension are all buildings that have been constructed in his time as Headmaster. If the rain stays away, he will also be able to add the new Annand Theatre to the list of world-class facilities added in his time for the use of TSS boys. The introduction of the Dean’s List, Primus Octoginta and the Scholar’s Tie, as well as the Academic First Team have been introduced during our current Headmaster’s tenure also.

The Dean’s List was introduced to acknowledge boys who have received six As in the junior years and four As in the senior years. At the same time the benchmarks for students were set, we also introduced the diligence scale, as well as the Ideal Teacher program. Not only were standards raised by the boys in the classroom in relation to academic rigour, but the expectations placed on teachers was, understandably, improved as well. The combination of good quality teaching and competition in the classroom to successfully make the Dean’s list has seen the numbers gradually increase each year since its inception.

On February 13, we held our Dean’s List Assembly where presented boys in Year 8 to 12 who made the Dean’s List in Semester 2, 2019 as Years 7s to 11s. There are almost 50 boys who received their Scholar’s Tie, Silver Palm (for straight As during the Semester) or are new to the Dean’s List. This is an outstanding effort.  Well done to all boys who featured on the Dean’s List and those who received their Scholar’s Tie for reaching the academic goals set and achieving those goals in 2019.

Can I also take the opportunity to thank the tireless effort of our Rowing Support Group who hosted the TSS Regatta last weekend in the rain at Wyaralong Dam. Thank-you for volunteering your time to assist with food for spectators and competitors and special thanks to those parents who assisted with parking on the day. Brisbane Grammar School won the annual TSS Challenge Flag by winning the Open 1st VIII race.
