Dixon Side Show Alley

On Tuesday, Dixon House conducted their highly anticipated Dixon Side Show Alley, a key highlight of Term 4 and one in which the boys, while so ably supported by Housemaster, Mrs Sandra Gippel, gained invaluable experience in planning and running a busy, complex event.  They did so incredibly successfully – with the range of side show challenges created being excellent and catering for all abilities, as well as planning out their charging rates and prize schedules.  It was a great fund-raising event, as well as a lesson in real life entrepreneurship.

Events such as these take a huge amount of planning and coordinating and the lion’s share of this work falls to our Housemasters.  Mrs Gippel as always has done an incredible job in motivating the boys, co-ordinating the support of House parents and encouraging other staff to pitch in.  I thank her sincerely for her work on this event, and for all of her work with the boys of Dixon House throughout the year.   I add my thanks to hers, to the many House families who so generously gave of their time (and I’m sure money), in making sure that the boys were so well prepared for the event and to all of the Preparatory School staff for the way they embraced the event.

To the boys of Dixon House I provide genuine congratulations for the great job they did.  Not only in coming up with engaging side show alley stalls, but also in the way they manned these games.  They were encouraging of boys’ efforts, flexible to adapt rules for the littler boys and professional in how they managed the business side of their venture.

The whole day had a tremendous buzz and it is another day at which the boys will have created happy memories of being at school.

Over $15,000 was raised on the day. This is an extraordinary amount and reflects the wonderfully generous spirit of our community.  The funds will be shared between two very worthy causes:-

Gold Coast Cancer Charity and SEQK9 pet rescue.

Staffing News

As information for parents, I include some of the staffing news as it relates to 2023.

Mr Mark Hoppe has accepted a position as class teacher at Coomera Anglican College.  Mr Hoppe returned to TSS Preparatory this year after a stint in Toowoomba, and loved reconnecting with our community, but is keen to explore the new challenge of working within the APS schools.  I thank him for his many years of service to our school and wish him all the best for this new enterprise.

Mrs Sue Jones will take 6 months of long service leave during Semester One next year and then return to teach in our Life and Faith (RE) department from the commencement of Semester 2.

Mrs Lisa Corbett has decided to step away from full time teaching, but will continue her association with the school in a relief teaching capacity.  Mrs Corbett has been a wonderful staff member and teacher to many boys during her time at TSS and I am pleased that we will continue to draw upon her expertise as she teaches across all year levels in this new capacity.

Reception Year Step Up day and Parent Information Session

On Tuesday of this week our Preschool boys and newly enrolled boys all attended the Reception classrooms for a morning of activities and familiarisation.

Reception is an important year for the boys as it is their first year of formal schooling. And while the program is carefully designed to support their transition and includes lots of activity and movement as well as more formal desk time, it is appropriately different to what they will have experienced in Preschool or external kindy programs and so this morning is an important opportunity for the school staff to observe the boys as they mix with one another in work and play.

The boys seemed to really enjoy the morning and we were pleased with how ready they are for Reception next year.

2023 Class information

Parents are advised that they will receive a letter (via email) from me in the first week of December informing them of their son’s class placement for the 2023 school year.  This letter will contain the name of his teacher, a welcoming letter of introduction from them, key dates for the start of the school year and House allocation for boys new to the school.  Information regarding the Uniform Shop opening times and dates will also be included.
