Friends of Prep Christmas Carols

Planning is well and truly underway for the Christmas Carols family get together on the last Sunday of the school year – November 19.  The event this year will be held on the School Oval and take advantage of the new sandstone seating wall and the  greater space permitting us to accommodate a larger audience.

Mark the date in your calendar now – with more information to come soon about ticketing and the program.  It certainly is shaping up to be a terrific event.

World Teachers’ Day – Friday October 27

This Friday, Queensland celebrates World Teacher’s Day.  This is a great opportunity to send your son’s teacher a quick message of support and thanks for the work they do and for us all to reflect on the very complex job that is teaching.  I see every single day around this school the incredible dedication that our teaching staff bring to their classrooms.  From the outside a teacher’s life may seem all 9-3 and long holidays, but the reality is very different and our teachers give many hours above what they are paid for to ensure the best outcomes for the boys.

As part of World Teachers’ Day the Queensland College of Teachers who are the registration body for the profession conduct an awards program to recognise outstanding teachers across our many schools and systems.

This year I am very proud to share with the community that 13 of our teaching staff at the Preparatory School and 5 of our teaching staff in the Senior School have been honoured with a nomination in these awards, by far the largest number of any single school in the state.

While there are many teachers on our staff worthy of such a nomination, those staff that the College of Teachers have acknowledged this year are:-

Excellence in Beginning to Teach Award:-

Mr Corey Tones – Year 5 Teacher

Mr William Horan – Head of Senior School Drama Department

Excellence in Teaching Award:-

Mrs Kerrie Anderson – Visual Arts Specialist Teacher

Mr James Sproule – Reception Teacher

Mr Fergus Trevethan – Year 4 Teacher

Susan Presto – Senior School Academic Staff and Habits of Mind Co-ordinator

Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Mrs Kerrie Aquilina – 3/4 Honours Class Teacher

Mrs Kathryn Barry – Deputy Head of Preparatory School – Curriculum

Mrs Lynda Darby – Arrowsmith Co-ordinator

Mrs Karen Humphreys – Co-ordinator of TSS Preschool

Mr Jeff Symms – Deputy Headmaster and Head of Preparatory School

Kerrie Dickson – Surmann Housemaster and Senior Business Teacher

Stephen Eardley – Head of Senior School Art Department

Craig Newton Year 3 Teacher and Year Level Curriculum Co-ordinator

Mrs Jasna Poeszus Preparatory School Gifted and Teacher

Outstanding Contribution to Teaching

Mr Brian Rowe – Year 6 Teacher and Shepherd Housemaster

Mrs Kerrie Anderson – Visual Arts Specialist Teacher

Mrs Sue Jones – Year 2 Teacher and Year Level Co-ordinator

Mr Jeff Symms – Deputy Headmaster and Head of Preparatory School

Mr Andrew Stark – Head of Libraries and Information Services and Associate Dean     Learning and Teaching Professional Learning Events.

I feel particularly honoured to have been selected as a State Finalist in the category of Outstanding Contribution to Teaching, and this Friday will attend a ceremony representing our school at which the state winners will be announced.  I am humbled by the quality of the teachers who have been named as State Finalists and touched to be considered alongside them.

Car park situation this Thursday and Friday

Information has been previously provided about changes to the carpark as you enter from Lupus Street this coming Thursday and Friday.

Traffic management staff will be on hand to assist the orderly movement of vehicles in and out of the carpark, but as always I respectfully ask for everyone’s patience and co-operation.    The end to our current building is in sight and it won’t be long now before our campus is builder-free!

There is enclosed with this newsletter a map which outlines the changes for these two days.

School Banking

Many parents may not be aware of the excellent service that the Commonwealth  Bank school banking program provides.  Teaching our boys about how to save money and the benefits in developing a strong saving habit is very worthwhile.   Volunteer parents from our Friends of Prep Committee undertake the school banking program each week and I really thank them for the time they put into processing the boys’ deposits.

Additionally, which parents might not be aware of is that the Commonwealth Bank provide 5% of all deposits made by the boys back to the school’s FOP committee as a thank you for providing this service.  This money does not get deducted from the boys’ deposits – they still deposit their full amount.

So the service is a win-win – the boys develop good saving habits and the FOP committee make a little bit of money which they, in turn, plow back into resources for the boys.

If your son is not already a school banker – maybe now is the time to get him started.

Further news regarding AB Paterson College’s Public Speaking Competition

I am very pleased to congratulate Taj Faragallah for his success at the recent AB Paterson Public Speaking competition.  Taj was our most successful Year 5 student this year, speaking all the way through to the Grand Final, in which he spoke very well.

Congratulations to Taj for representing the school so well in an open competition!

Grab a chair in the new Hall!

Preparatory School families will have received an email this week from our Philanthropy Office regarding the opportunity to have one of the chairs in the permanent grandstand seating of our new hall, named in the family’s honour.

This is a great opportunity to have your family’s name associated with this game-changing facility and the Preparatory Office has been receiving quite a bit of enquiry about it.
