Finance and Payroll Officer

Full time (not term time) – immediate start available

The Southport School is a leading Anglican Day and Boarding School for boys situated on the banks of the beautiful Nerang River in the heart of the Gold Coast. The Southport School (TSS) has been established for 118 years and is committed to providing excellence in leadership, learning and teaching, pastoral care and extra-curricular endeavours within a balanced, holistic Christian environment. The School has a vibrant Boarding, Education, Cultural and Sporting program that extends across the full year and two campuses.

The School now has an opportunity for an experienced Finance and Payroll Officer in a full time capacity (48 working weeks + 4 weeks annual leave) and will operate Monday to Friday 8.15am to 4.15pm commencing in February 2018.

This role reports directly to the Financial Controller and is responsible for:


  • Managing payroll queries and enquiries and processing for over 250 records fortnightly including payment summaries and year end reconciliations;
  • Recording, reconciling and adjusting all leave entitlements for staff;
  • Preparing monthly superannuation submissions and reconciliations;
  • Preparing annual workcover returns and point of contact with centrelink, health insurance, superannuation and salary packaging providers;
  • Attending to reconciliation and payment of PAYG withholding tax; and
  • Ensuring all stakeholders are updated with any legislative changes in relation to taxation, superannuation, or any other employment related changes.


  • Reconciling and maintaining accurate bank reconciliations;
  • Compiling monthly recharge invoices and assisting budget holders with general ledger queries;
  • Assisting the financial controller with the annual budgeting process and statutory reporting requirements;
  • Preparing year end and month end journals, reconciliations, and work papers as required; and
  • Processing of general journals and provision of general ledger expenditure analysis

Key selection criteria include:

  • Holding a relevant accountancy, finance, payroll qualification/certification (beneficial though not essential);
  • Recent experience in high volume payroll processing;
  • Have a strong understanding of key accounting concepts including but not limited to double entry accounting, reconciliations, budgets and general ledger analysis;
  • High attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to manage private and confidential information; and
  • A highly relational approach to customer service and stakeholder support.

Ideally we are seeking candidates who:

  • Are engaged in 3rd or 4th year of tertiary education, ideally in the field of education (not essential) or who are able to ‘live in and work out’.
  • Ideally will hold a first aid certificate
  • Must be eligible to obtain a working with children blue card and comply with the Anglican Schools Commission Code of Conduct
  • Are keen to engage in the life of the school and boarding community
  • Are able to manage and provide 15 hours of supervisory duties per week inclusive of rostered weekend duties (not every weekend).
