Mr Leigh Holtsbaum – Fishing Club Coordinator
The TSS fishing club held a catch and release fishing competition on Sunday afternoon the 30 April down at the Boatshed. The competition was hotly contested with over 50 Boarders, a few Day boys as well as some resident staff and their families turning out in the hope of catching the big one. The fishing was steady throughout the afternoon and many Bream, Tarwhine, Flathead, Flounder, Trevally, Queenfish, Whiting, and Garfish were caught and most released to fight another day. The boys used a mixture of baits and lures with prawns scoring most of the fish. It was great to see so boys enjoying the river and wetting a line and having a laugh.
The competition was fierce and boys had report to the boatshed in order to measure their fish live and release them immediately in order to score points. Most boys got on the score board but the 1st place honours went to Thorold’s Richard Burey with 10 fish measuring a total of 194cm, 2nd place was Delpratt’s Mitch O’Neill with 4 fish measuring 110cm and 3rd place was Roger’s House Oliver Gleeson with 4 fish measuring 81cm. The catch of the day went to Mitch O’Neill with a 51cm Flathead that was caught on a soft plastic down at the river mouth. All the winners took home some great prizes, but more importantly everyone had a good time and it was excellent to several boys catch their first ever fish.
The boys also enjoyed a sausage sizzle provided by Mr Watt that was cooked by Mr Smith and Mr Ibbott. Thanks to the staff involved and to all the boys who fished making it a great Sunday afternoon.
