Former Wallaby great Greg Cornelsen has a message for you about your sons’ conduct at School

By Renee Buckingham

Greg Cornelsen was one of the all-time great backrow forwards. He is remembered by many for the four tries he scored against the All Blacks in 1978 securing Australia a 30 to 16 victory. To this day he remains the only Wallabies forward with four tries in a Test.

What a lot of people don’t know is how much of a huge supporter this renowned number 8 is of our quality School. No, he is not an Old Boy, but if you spoke to him and heard his passion for TSS you would undoubtedly think he was.

Just turned 70, Greg is months away from retirement which will see him step down from his role of Director of Philanthropy at TSS. This week he spoke to our boys about their conduct around the School. Despite being notably unassuming, Greg calls a spade a spade. His old school values and ways have been nothing but a blessing to TSS over the past 6 years that he has been here. He told the boys that during his time at the School it’s never ceased to amaze him how polite and considerate they have been.

“I am constantly blown away by the boys’ social skills and manners,” said Greg.

“I like looking people in the eye as they pass and the vast majority of TSS boys look me straight in the eye and say …Good morning, Sir, how are you, Sir…before then asking if they can help me. It’s incredible.”

“I believe that this is one of the things that sets TSS boys apart. Having those social skills at a young age is exceptional.”

Despite all of his outstanding achievements in life, the once unstoppable backrow forward still has one project to conquer, and he needs your help.

His final fundraising project for the School before he says goodbye to us, is the impressive Old Southportonians’ Pavilion. Greg’s efforts to-date to see this building come to fruition for TSS boys past and present, has been unyielding. Earmarked for the northern end of the Village Green, Greg is determined to see soil turned by November so this first-class Pavilion can be enjoyed by the TSS community by mid next year.
