The GPS chess squad hosted Brisbane Grammar School last Friday. BGS has been the powerhouse of GPS chess and the team knew that there was a high level of chess required to match the opposition.
All the players played well on the night. There were no early finishers, indicating that all matches were closely contested. Nine teams played on the night and after all games were completed, the overall results were: TSS won 2 divisions, IGS won 4 divisions and 3 divisions were drawn.
The Junior Team played very well, narrowly defeating BGS 5 – 3. Sonny Walkinshaw on Board 1 of the Junior Team was awarded player of the round for his convincing win. The other winning division on the night for TSS was the Open F. The Premier Team fought very well but in the end their much higher rated opponents were too strong. Robert McCullough on Board 1 continued his exceptional run of form and should have ended with a drawn game except for the need to play quickly, due to a commitment to get to an Eisteddfod performance after his game.
The team looks forward to a bye round this week before hosting Nudgee College on the evening of the Show Holiday.
