The GPS chess squad hosted Ipswich Grammar School last Friday with 11 teams playing on the night. The two schools proved to be very closely matched and after all games were completed, the overall results saw TSS win 4 divisions, IGS also win 4 divisions and 3 divisions were drawn.
The Premier Team won their second game of the season, narrowly defeating Ipswich 5 – 3. The player of the round was Komei Jo, who played Board 3 in the Premier Team and was the last to finish on the night. Komei remainder composed under the pressure of knowing he had to win his match to give the team overall, a draw would not have been enough. He also had time pressure with less than two minutes remaining on his clock and his opponent far from giving in. Komei calmly and decisively pushed ahead with a small advantage to secure his win, with both player’s clocks running out. A very exciting game.
The team looks forward to travelling to BBC for this Friday’s game.
