Mr Tony Watt – McKinley Housemaster
It has been some time in the making, but we are ecstatic to announce that McKinley House has been placed the best Senior boarding house last term with regard to academic diligence. Moreover, McKinley was placed third overall in the entire school. This is a wonderful achievement. I wish to acknowledge the Year 12 cohort and their leadership of the academic tone in the House, our superb Year 8 cohort and the notable improvement of our Year 9 cohort. Coupled with the expertise of Mr Alini and Mr Hellier- we have achieved what many in our boarding community thought was impossible – McKinley Number 1!
Congratulations to the below boys who achieved significant academic results and/or improvement over Term Two.
The boys are fully involved in the Term Three sports of rugby and basketball with large participation numbers across the House. Congratulations to Campbell Parata and Tom van der Schyff for their selection into the First XV and Brock McMahon in the First V Basketball side. It was great to see both Hugh Robinson and Boyd Radel get time in the First XV game too last Saturday. From my perspective, it is great to see Ben Gibson running in full flight again after a long run of injuries and look forward to him dominating for McKinley at the Inter House athletics carnival later in the term.
Just a little update that Katie Alini is due over the next week for the family’s second child. I can report dad is becoming more anxious, but we excitingly await news on the next edition to McKinley. We will keep everyone posted.
This term has kicked off smoothly and efficiently with most boys getting involved in rugby and basketball. Congratulations to Brock McMahon for being the first McKinley boy in a very long time to be picked in the First X Basketball team. Tom van der Schyff and Campbell Parata are both in the First XV Rugby and Hugh Robinson and Boyd Radel are reserves so well done to them. But in McKinley, we also appreciate the boys who are doing their best in the 13D’s or Open Sixth XV, just getting involved and having fun. That’s what we are about here.
It was fantastic news to find out that McKinley was ranked first in the Boarding Houses for average diligence. McKinley usually places last for diligence so it was a really proud moment to find out about this huge improvement. Not everyone was put on this earth to perform well in academics so it is really good to see that we are all having a red hot crack with our schoolwork.
Talking of schoolwork, Year 12s have the most intense term of our schooling this term, especially the boys doing QCS. The workload has most definitely started already and we are preparing our planners. We have learned from Mr Watt that the most important day of the week for study is Sunday so hopefully we will all take that into consideration and smash out some extra hours of study this weekend.
This term is a big one and, already, it looks like it will be a very a successful one.
Happy birthday to our June and July birthdays
At the commencement of the term we welcomed Mr Ben Mallett, a Junior Resident Master attached to McKinley. Ben writes:
My name is Ben Mallett, I have come form Millfield school in the the UK to commence on a gap year here at The Southport School. I am 18 and have just graduated from school only a month ago. I am a keen rugby player hoping to play in Australia. I am also looking forward to traveling around Australia and New Zealand to find new adventures and cultures.
