Mr Dan Saw, McKinley Housemaster
If longevity and the want to stay in boarding until the very last night is any indication of our culture, then we are going ok! We farewelled the majority of our Year 12 2021 from the House this week. With the final exam complete, they are finally in relax mode in preparation for Schoolies celebrations. Stay safe boys and please don’t be a stranger if you are on the coast next year.
Out with the old and in with the new – we welcomed the 2022 Year 8’s into the House this week for their sleepover. In typical McKinley style; steak on the BBQ, fire pit roaring with marshmallows on the toast and the senior boys swapping stories and generally making them feel part of the House, I am confident the boys are looking forward to officially joining us in 2022. George Powell, presented them with our War Cry plaque and spoke about the tradition of shouting it out in front of the House, individually, at the start of the new year. Definitely a daunting experience but over-welhmingly I hear this is one of the highlights for boys of their time in McKinley.
Post House Supper and the Graduation festivities, the boys in the House have been in serious study mode. I highlighted one of the legacies of our Year 12 2021 – a culture of prioritizing academics and collaborating with your mates. Tash and I were seriously impressed with our 2022 Year 10 last night, studying in groups last night in the common room (unprompted!) and assisting each other along the way. As I speak, Wally Hacon and Will Brooks are sitting behind me both working hard in preparation for their Business exam.
I thought I would share one of my highlights for 2021, and it actually happened last week. Josh Weis, sung solo (unaccompanied by music) to the School at the Remembrance Day assembly. All the superlatives can’t do this performance justice – a moment of pure nerve and courage! Well done Weisy, we are all very proud of you!
To sign off for 2011 (well, we still have a week to go!), thank you to all the great McKinley families for your unwavering support of the House staff and most importantly your boys! We wish you a safe and very merry Christmas.
Just a short note from me to welcome into McKinley our new Year 8’s for a sleep over . We will be rather a full House as some of our year 13’s are still completing their last exam today as well. After this they finally say goodbye to McKinley. It has been a strong cohort as the boys have stayed together, even some who have finished their exams totally have not yet left. So we will have a mixture of emotions, the excitement and anxious feelings of starting new into the House for the young ones and the feeling of satisfaction on completing their school life mixed with the final act of leaving McKinley for the last time for our year 13’s. We all wish them happiness and success as they start their new adventures for the future.
On a personal note, I had 2 days off last week as we warmly welcomed into our family a new grandson, but I found that while I was away a new Matron was discovered in McKinley. Tom Gall, who only came to the House this Term as a Year 11. Basically he took the washing on himself. In such a short time it is a credit to him how he has embraced the House and the other boys. He was not totally alone though, he did have some help from other remarkable boys who stepped up, like Pos, Elijah, Brooksy and Johnno to whom I am also very grateful.
I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New year. Enjoy your beautiful boys over the holidays. Till next year, stay safe everyone!
