From the Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School – Mr Andrew Hawkins
As we get to the end of the school year, we begin to reflect on 2020. TSS acknowledges that this year has been the toughest and possibly most challenging year for many. We have been fortunate to go through this year alongside you and your sons, in a year that has burdened so many with uncertainty. We feel for the seniors of 2020 who had to wrestle with the challenges of COVID in their penultimate year with the added complexity of the first year of ATAR external exams. We also acknowledge what a challenge this year has been for our Pre-Prep and Reception boys who are only just beginning their education journey.
We thank you all for your ongoing support of our school and this community. Without you and your support we cannot survive as an institution. Many of our families have sacrificed a great deal of hardship to continue to prioritise education and TSS for your son(s). For that we are grateful.
We farewell our Headmaster, Mr Greg Wain, after 17 years as our Headmaster. We also appreciate that it took all of his experience and knowledge to guide us through the challenges of COVID and online learning, the challenges of border restrictions, limitations on who could and could not live here as a boarder, the leadership as a GPS Headmaster to get our sports and activities occurring in term three. I am humbled to be taking over as Headmaster from Mr Wain in 2021.
Greg’s departure has taken some of the attention away from Mr John Wallace who retires after 36 years of service to TSS. Originally a Prep School Teacher, he then became Head of Morse House for Year 8 boys, followed by Biddle Housemaster and then Director of Boarding. After leaving boarding Mr Wallace has spent his final years in teaching back in the classroom and leading our Speech and Variety classes. He totals over 400 speech and variety meetings in his 36 years. Mr Wallace is the quintessential school master, gentlemen, scholar, athlete. He will be missed. We are extremely grateful and consider our school lucky to have you for much of your career.
As this is my last newsletter article as Head of Senior School, I thank the Senior School community for your support of me in my role. I look forward next year to sharing my time with the Prep School as well as the Senior School. I also look forward to strengthening our relationship with St Hilda’s and doing more on a united front into the future.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas with you and your families this year. Let us hope that 2021 is a more settled year for us all.
