Monday November 6 – Change for all students in all year levels

Ms Jo Inglis – Deputy Head of Learning and Teaching

Year 12 students continue their final exams on Monday November 6, concluding on Thursday November 9. The Year 12 Alternate Program commences on Friday November 10, continuing into the final week of school for Year 12 students, which includes Final Senior School Assembly, Valedictory and Graduation on Friday November 17.

Year 11 students commence exam block on Monday November 6, with Year 12 subjects beginning on Thursday November 9. It is important that students are present for their new Year 12 classes from Thursday November 9 until Wednesday November 22 during which subject matter will be covered that will be assessed in or before the Term 1 2018 exam block and will contribute to students’ summative Year 12 profile, which in turn informs subject results and OPs.

Year 10 students commence The Southport School Outdoor Education Program on Monday November 6, with either the Great Wall Expedition in China or the Outward Bound Expedition in northern NSW. TSS considers the Year 10 Outdoor Education programs both locally and in China to be critical aspects of the overarching philosophy of a TSS Education in Learning to Lead. Both unique experiences, the Year 10 Outdoor Education Programs are led by highly qualified and experienced Outward Bound personnel and Great Wall Hikers, who work with schools and industry to provide both young adults, mature employees and industry leadership teams programs to develop higher order skills in leadership, personal development and team building. The Year 10 Outdoor Education post-camp program, which commences on Thursday November 16 and concludes on Thursday November 23, provides opportunities for further team and goal setting as well as preparation for Year 11.

Queensland schools are in transition between Senior Secondary assessment and Tertiary Entrance systems, the existing OP system that current Year 10, 11 & 12 students are undertaking and the new QCE system for which current Year 7, 8 & 9 students are preparing.

A key feature of the new QCE is Year 12 external state-wide exams that will contribute between 25% and 50% of final Year 12 results, which together with internal assessment, will determine students’ new Tertiary Entrance number, the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank).

TSS has been working to best accommodate the coming changes for Year 7, 8 & 9 students by beginning a staged shift of the academic year from 2017 to conclude in 2020, as illustrated. TSS teachers and students are very familiar with the forward planning that is occurring and parents have been and will continue to be provided with further information and detail at Subject Information Sessions that occur during 2018. The main driver of this shift is to ensure that the first and subsequent cohorts of QCE students have sufficient length of time in all programs and particularly Year 11 and 12 academic programs so that they are well prepared for External Exams that the QCAA has advised will commence in week 4 of Term 4, 2020.

Consequently, Year 7, 8 & 9 students commence Year 8, 9 & 10 2018 work respectively on Monday November 6. The academic programs covered in the last three weeks of term will include assessment that will contribute to 2018 Term 1 results. It is critically important that all students attend at school until Thursday November 23 so as not to be disadvantaged academically in 2018.
