Mr Andrew Hawkins, Ninth Headmaster of The Southport School

We would like to congratulate Mr Andrew Hawkins on his selection as ninth Headmaster of The Southport School.

Andrew is one of many TSS Old Boys that has gravitated back to TSS as a Staff member. He originally came to TSS as a boarder in McKinley House from his hometown of Emerald in Central Queensland. After graduating from TSS in 1995 as Vice-School Captain alongside former Wallaby Captain Nathan Sharpe as School Captain, Andrew ventured off on a Gap Year to the UK. It was when he was in the UK working as a PE Assistant that he fell in love with his vocation of teaching. As a proud former TSS student, Andrew will be the first Old Boy Headmaster of The Southport School.

Andrew completed his Bachelor of Applied Science and Bachelor of Education at the University of Queensland before working at Corinda High School and Indooroopilly High School. He then moved to Brisbane Grammar School where he held the position of Boarding Housemaster. He has also completed a Masters of Education in Counselling at UQ.

Married to Zoe, the Hawkins’ have four children – Isla, Mac (Year 4 at TSS), Mia and Hattie. Andrew is an active Anglican with links to St Peter’s, Southport.

Well prepared during his time at TSS for his upcoming role as Headmaster, Andrew has been Head of the Health and Physical Education Department, a Boarding Housemaster, Dean of Students, and is currently Deputy Headmaster – Head of Senior School. Through these roles at TSS, he has developed a strong ethic relating to the care and understanding of boys and this is something Andrew is very passionate about. His dedication to the learning and wellbeing of boys is highly regarded by all stakeholders of the School. Andrew has also displayed a unique ability to lead the Senior Executive Team in a very humble and caring manner.

From many interactions in recent months with members of our community, there has been overwhelming support for Andrew as an outstanding leader who absolutely understands TSS culture and the School’s vision which the Council wishes to continue in the coming years. As a proudly non-selective school, we are home to over 1,650 boys from many backgrounds. Andrew’s ability to connect with all boys through his passion, integrity, honesty and general love for our School has enabled a long selection process to result in a very satisfying and promising appointment for the years to follow.

Andrew shall follow in the footsteps of an exceptional man in Greg Wain who has been a leading light in boys’ education during his 17-year tenure. Following in Greg’s footsteps will be a challenge for our new Headmaster, but we are confident Andrew has the ability and desire to rise up and meet this challenge.
