Mr Jeff Symms – Deputy Headmaster – Head of Preparatory
There has been a great deal of activity lately with our oval works and new entry onto Brolga Avenue. We have been advised by the construction company that these projects should now be complete by the end of the month. We are also in negotiations with the Gold Coast City Council about a school speed zone on Brolga Avenue also. I know how much we are all looking forward to the completion of this car park project.
The new Preparatory School Hall is progressing well. Last week a major cement pour occurred with around 70 cement trucks delivering the concrete for the main slab. The aerial photographs included provide a great perspective of the scope of this project.
Last Friday the boys participated in the school’s annual cross country carnival. It was a great day weather wise and also a very well run event. A huge thankyou to our departing Sports Master Mr Andrew Robertson and all of the PE team for the management of this carnival. The boys ran well and really committed to their House and the support shown to each other was terrific.
After a good competitive series of races Musgrave House ended the day as the winners of the carnival. Congratulations to Musgrave and to all Houses for a great competition undertaken with great spirit.
A new addition to the TSS mascot family was unveiled just prior to the cross country carnival. Pup, Sharkies little brother was revealed on assembly and then attended the carnival where he encouraged all runners to give it their best. Pup also assisted with the medal presentations.
Pup will show up to support our boys at many events, and like Sharkie, I’m sure will prove to become a real crowd favourite. If you see Pup around, come up and say hello!
Each year we host staff from ‘Relationships and Reproductive Health’ an organisation which deliver high quality relationship and sexual education to students. The presenters are so well trained and very knowledgeable and feedback from boys, teachers and parents, (who attend the parent information session) has always been very strong. The date of the parent information session will be advised through the newsletter and Prepbook when confirmed, and I strongly advise parents to attend. At some stage most of us are asked a question about sex and or sexuality by our children and having the skills to answer appropriately and effectively is a great thing.
Interestingly staff from the organisation recently commended the school on being proactive in this area and identified TSS Preparatory as a leader in ensuring that an evidence-based approach to developing protective behaviours in students was established across the full school. Our program is comprehensive and covers all year levels, providing the boys with high quality and accurate information that assists them to build life-long positive relationships.
The Friends of Prep Committee are proud to host the annual Mother’s Day morning tea. Tickets are still available, but in short supply as this event is always a highlight of the school calendar. The boys in the early years are busy preparing their choral pieces with which to entertain you all and of course the boys video messages of love to their mums will be great.
I thank all members of the committee and other parent volunteers for their dedication to creating a really special morning and to all families who join in the fun and provide support to the school.
This time of year is a busy one for our admissions office with families new to the school seeking enrolment for their son for next year. The Preschool is filling quickly and any parents who are considering enrolling their son for Preschool 2017 must submit an application as soon as possible.
Reception is another year level which fills very quickly and with only 8 available new places opening up in this year level each year, Parents considering enrolling for the Reception year should act as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
The fortnightly ‘open morning’ walking tours of the Prep Campus are also quite busy. If you have friends or family who would like to tour our campus and hear about our educational programs, then please have them register online for the walking tour.
The Parent information session for the Honours Class Program 2017 was conducted last night (Wednesday evening). This session provided information to interested parents about the Honours classes and the Honours Scholarship program.
If you were unable to attend but wish to register your son for consideration for the program please do so through the Honours Page of the school’s website. Enrolment in the Honours Program assessment day is open until Friday May 12.
