Readers are Leaders…

Welcome back to Semester Two! As always, we ‘hit the ground running’ – Term Three begins busy and promises to get even busier.

During the busiest of times in the school calendar, many parents feel powerless to help when their son becomes stressed and overwhelmed about his schoolwork. It is not just senior students who experience this level of stress; research indicates that for some students this starts as early as Year 7.

If you find your son is beginning to experience stress and anxiety related to his schoolwork, here are some strategies you might like to consider using:

  1. FIND OUT MORE: What is causing the most anxiety? Does your son feel anxious about tests and assignments or is he struggling to plan and manage his workload? Once you know more about the reason, you and he can take action.
  2. LET THE SCHOOL KNOW: Talk to your son’s mentor or Housemaster about the anxiety your son is experiencing. Together, you will be able to address the issues and come up with some solutions.
  3. DECIDE STRATEGIES: Once the problem is understood, the next step is to decide what strategies to try. You may have some ideas of things your son could try, or, you may find some ideas on the Study Skills Handbook site available through the Library homepage.
  4. DON’T GIVE UP: If a strategy doesn’t work, then try something different.  Different people will have different suggestions so talk to other teachers and parents about the issue and see if they have other ideas you could try.
  5. CONSIDER EXTRA HELP: Your son might need additional support and this is where your son’s Housemaster can offer assistance. Open discussions help find solutions.
