Mr Andrew Stark – Head of Libraries
Monday night saw the first session of the Parent Study Skills Program for parents of boys in year 7 to 9. It was a full house in the Memorial Room with over 75 parents (and a handful of boys) attending a presentation titled ‘Boys, Brains and the Importance of Books’.
The presentation focused on two main aspects of boys’ education and learning: brain development, and the value of reading. In a nutshell, to ensure good brain development, it is essential that young learners take regular and appropriate exercise, eat healthily, drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep. If these activities can become part of the daily routine for your son then he will be preparing himself for success.
It is also essential that regular reading become part of the daily routine for boys. This will not only enable your son to develop a clearer understanding and appreciation of the English language, it will set him up for greater success in every subject at school and every task he faces during life. Reading is a life-long-learning strategy. TSS Library has an extensive collection of print and non-print texts available for boys to borrow. Our audio and e-books are available for boys to download to any device. To access, boys will need to download the Borrow Box app and set up an account. This will be further explained to parents at the session on Monday 17th February.
Parents who were unable to join us for this session are very welcome to access the presentation notes via the Library web page. This may be found: Parent Portal – My TSS – LibGuides (look for the blue cloud). Click on the ‘Presentations and Tutorials’ tab to access the presentation.
For next Monday’s session we will have two guest speakers: Mr Scott McDonald and Ms Heidi Jackson (Head and Assistant Head of English respectively) who will provide an overview of the English Curriculum for Years 7 to 9 along with some valuable strategies and insights into creating the perfect piece of writing. Venue will be the Memorial Room; start time 6pm.
