Mr Andrew Stark – Head of Libraries
TSS is one of the few schools to boast an extensive Music Library. In fact, this specialised Library is one of the largest of its kind in Queensland.
The Southport School Music Library is also known as the C G Willox Memorial Library. It has been housed in the Cable Station since 1982 and was named in honour of (Cecil) George Willox after his death in 1981. Mr Willox arrived on the Gold Coast in 1972 and after several years tutoring and teaching private music lessons, joined the Music Staff at TSS in 1978 where he made his mark as a highly accomplished musician.
Electronic cataloguing was introduced to the Music School Library in 2001. Prior to that date, all catalogue entries were written by hand and kept in ledgers. Some of these ledgers and their entries are still referred to today. The very first choral piece catalogued is Communion Service in F Major by Harold E Darke which was published in October 1926. This work is cited in the internationally noted online research reference provider JSTOR.
The Music School Library has an enviable collection of works and provides a wealth of resources for music teachers and students. The current library collection includes scores for: Marching Band (200), Concert Orchestra (267), Concert Band (2,030), Ensemble (980), Big Band (500), String Orchestra (420) and Choral works (1561). In addition to these, the Music Library houses an extensive collection of resources for exams, theory studies, and vocal, aural and sight reading exercises. Music monographs take up much of the shelving as do boxes containing sheet music for every instrument. The collection is used on both campus with Prep Music holding a small number of resources for day to day use.
The Music School Library is staffed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For further details please contact [email protected] .
