Reverend John’s Commissioning

From the Headmaster – Mr Andrew Hawkins

This week, we commissioned our new School Chaplain, Reverend John Dougherty. As I have mentioned on various occasions last year, Father Jonathan, our former Chaplain, suffered a stroke and while his recovery initially was rapid, he plateaued and was unable to return to work in late 2021. At that time, Reverend Dougherty felt he had been called back to the school environment from Parish life on the Northern Gold Coast.

Reverend John was a teacher in his former life, before becoming ordained as an Anglican Priest. We welcomed Reverend John to our community earlier this year, however, as a father of three boys at TSS, and two daughters at St Hilda’s, his family is well established in our community.

Former parent, Bishop Cameron Venables, commissioned Reverend John on Tuesday and we welcomed members of the Anglican Schools Commission, former School Chaplains, local parish priests, and Federal Member for Moncrieff, Mrs. Angie Bell to join us to celebrate the commissioning.

I am sure you will join me in officially welcoming Reverend John and his family to TSS. The Prep School families will enjoy Mr Tim Newton, our Assistant to the Chaplain, who supports our Prep Chapels and Services. It is certainly reassuring, as an Anglican School, that the faith and spiritual life of our school is in such great hands with these two individuals and the staff who support them in Life and Faith lessons.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents, staff, and students for your support of TSS over the busy term. There were many disruptions due to influenza, Covid-19, and the relentless rain. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we worked through the challenges of the rain, as well as staff shortages at various times.
