Ian Browne – Rogers Housemaster
With a very busy few weeks passed, and now the end in sight, the Rogers boys are remaining organised and focussed on assessment and preparations for the Year 7 Camp next week.
Year 7 Camp is from Monday 11 until Thursday 14 September. All students will require for this is a pillow, sleeping bag, an old pair of shoes that can get wet, walking shoes/sneakers, and a jumper. The clothing list sent out to parents is very thorough (too thorough), and my suggestion is that all the clothing the Rogers boys really need, they already have.
Can I ask all parents to start going onto Reach, and send in the end of term arrangements for your son. The bus from Camp does not return to Rogers until approx. 2pm, so no earlier leave will be permitted. The Leave arrangements in early, assist staff knowing how many boys will be in Rogers on the Thursday night, and for catering purposes. Any assistance in getting this in early is appreciated.
For the past 6 years, Rogers has hosted twice a year, a Sleepover for all new students who are attending the following year. This year, due to the huge amount of interest for Rogers in future years, we have hosted 4 sleepovers with the latest one being this coming Thursday prior to GC Show holiday. The Sleepover assist a new boy to experience what Boarding environment is like, and hopefully alleviate any fears they may have prior to coming to start their TSS Boarding journey. With Rogers ‘over-subscribed’ in enrolments for the next few years, potentially we may have to increase the sleepovers to accommodate all interested new students.
This particular weekend is also very busy here at TSS, with the GC Show on Friday, and then a very exciting Saturday sport fixture vs Nudgee College. With both Basketball and Rugby vying for Premierships, Nudgee will be a major victory for our teams. If you can, come and watch TSS on this day live in the Centenary Centre and on the Village Green. If you can’t be here, please watch in particular the ‘Live Streamed’ rugby game via the TSS Sports Facebook page.
Last weekend, Mr Holtsbaum and a number of other staff too the Rogers boys fishing out to Wave Break Island, on the GC Broadwater. A lot of fun was had by all, and even some fish were caught.
A HUGE thankyou to all the day boy families that hosted the Rogers boys last weekend for the Adopt a Boarder weekend. Every single student was hosted, and have a wonderfully exciting time with their Day family. It is hoped now that this ‘relationship’ will further develop over time, and both families will host each other again in the future. Thanks again for all your help and assistance.
House athletics was a big day for the boys of Rogers. With nearly every student in the House competing, with was great to see them all challenge themselves against the Day Houses and each other. The event is at the Griffith University Athletics stadium, which also will host many international athletes next year during the commonwealth games. Congratulations to our Thorold House students for being a part of the Overall Championship winning House, and also to Delpratt house for coming in second, and still leading the House Shield going into the last event, Cluster 3 (Touch, B’Ball and Chess).
Next term Learn to Row commences for the Rogers boys. This is where the boys all learn the basics of rowing and coxing. With technique sessions on the Ergo machines, they will all have the opportunity to hop into either a Quad or a Single scull, and rowing under instruction up and down the Nerang River. Other sporting opportunities also commence in preparation for Term 1 Year 8. These inc Cricket trials, Sailing, Gymnastics, and Swimming as well as GPS Athletics.
As we have now for a number of years, Rogers voted this week for their House Officials for the year. We are proud to announce the following students are to lead Rogers House through the rest of 2017;
House Captain – Joe Madden
House Vice Captains – Brayden Hudson and Archie Chandler
House Sports Captains – Charlie Lane and Jack Ware
Rogers house congratulates these students on their appointments.
Congratulations to 4 of our Rogers boys who have been named on the prestigious academic ‘Deans List’. To gain entry to this list, students from grade 7 must achieve 6 As &/or Top 20 Primus Octoginta. An outstanding achievement by Joe Madden, Jack Ware, Brodie Graham and Murdoch Johnstone, all whom are extremely busy boys academically, and in their co-curricular activities. Well done and congratulations…
Finally, a date claimer for all parents, the Rogers House Presentation Evening will be held in the House on Wednesday 22nd November. This themed night of music, entertainment and awards will be one that all parents should attend. Invites for this will be sent out early Term 4. Students can after this event go home with parents.
Final reminder, Mr Ian Browne will be on Long Service at the end of this term till middle of Term 4 (8th September till 17th October). I’m celebrating with my wife our 25th Wedding Anniversary, and going to Europe for the first time. Any concerns or issues during this time, please contact Leigh Holtsbaum directly, as he will be the main contact in my absence.
Have a great holiday with your sons, and we will see you in Term 4…
