From the Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School – Mr Andrew Hawkins
I wrote an article after Clean-up Australia Day to remind families that TSS is a member school to Round Square. Kurt Hahn was the founder of the Round Square philosophy in education having been the Headmaster of Gordonstoun School in Scotland. Gordonstoun School’s main quadrangle is shaped as a square on the outside with a round grass oval in the middle – thus the Round Square. The TSS Headmaster in 1974 was Mr John Day who had previously been Deputy Headmaster of Gordonstoun School before his appointment to Headmaster of TSS. Mr Day immediately approved our membership to Round Square.
Round Square offers a clear philosophy of education which includes six pillars or IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service) — the foundation of the development of creative, responsible, caring global citizens. The Pillars of Round Square facilitate experiences that are pursued for the sake of knowledge and building character.
IDEALS Week is based purely on the philosophy of Round Square and we have our entire community giving back this week. From raising money for Guide Dogs Qld, Surf Life Saving to Sony Camp and Cadet Camp. All of these activities take an enormous amount of planning and I would like to thank the staff for the hard work in getting these activities organised. Special mention has to go to Mr Conan Bland and his Army Cadet Staff, Mr Ken Connors and his Navy Cadet Staff, Mrs Robyn Gibson and Mr Stephan Eardley and their tireless efforts for Sony Camp.
Enjoy the Term 3 break and the time with your boys. We wish safe travels to our many different tours occurring.
