Safer Internet Day 2019

Mr Andrew Hawkins – Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

Australia celebrated Safer Internet Day in 2019 on Tuesday February 5. I have included in this article four slides that I will be showing the senior campus students at Assembly this week. A quick summary of the 4Rs of Cyber Safety is:

Respect: Show others respect and you will earn respect online

Responsibility: Own it, Share it, Value it

Resilience: Block others, ignore and don’t respond, Report bad behavior, Don’t feed the trolls, and share or talk with a responsible adult

Reasoning: Verify the content for misinformation, disinformation or malinformation by checking the source

What does cyberbullying look like in our modern world?

1. Posting nasty comments
2. Using intimate images to humiliate someone
3. Threatening violence
4. Misusing someone else’s social media account
5. Creating fake accounts to harass and intimidate
6. Sharing upsetting images and videos
7. Making unwanted persistent contact with someone online

If your son is being cyberbullied encourage them to talk to someone, don’t respond, block the bully, collect evidence and if the social media site has not responded in 48 hours report it to esafety.gov.au/reportingcyberbullying

We have great staff here at TSS that can assist and some very good quality external areas for help are Kids Helpline, eheadspace and Parentline.
