Mr Nicholas Stansbie, Sailing Coordinator
The TSS Racing team participated in the Teams Racing regatta at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on Sunday 1 November and Sunday 15 November. Unfortunately on Sunday 8 November, unfortunately the weather intervened resulting in no sailing being possible.
Teams racing is an exciting round-robin series of short races between teams of three boats. It is the best combination of places for the boats in a team which determines the winner of each race. This is determined by adding up the places for each team to find the lowest total. For example, a team with boats in second, third, and fourth place, (total = 9) will beat the other team with boats in first, fifth and sixth place (total = 12). As you can imagine this leads to some highly tactical, very competitive racing as each boat needs to focus as much on where their team mates are finishing as much as themselves. Sailing has a lot of rules and boats breaching a rule need to complete a 360 degree turn, which slows their progress considerably.
We entered two teams, TSS Red, competing in the Gold Fleet and TSS Blue in the Silver Fleet. Both teams faced a number of opponents from other schools including Brisbane Grammar, Brisbane Boys College, Iona College, Moreton Bay College, Moreton Bay Boys College, Lourdes Hill College and Ormiston College. Over the two Sundays of racing, both teams only lost twice. TSS Red finished in first place in the Gold Fleet and TSS Blue in second place in the Silver Fleet, following a count back which denied them first place.
The boys competed extremely well and displayed much learning and progress in their tactical knowledge and ability to communicate as a team. This augurs well for a the second half of the season which resumes in the New Year, when our boys will be competing for the State Championships and the GPS Championships.
We have a final regatta at TSS on Sunday, when all the boys who have been learning to sail this term will have the opportunity to race and demonstrate their skills
