There were huge numbers in attendance (and I’m not just referring to the ridiculous amount of midgies) as the mighty U6 Reds played an away game against Surfers Paradise Dolphins this past Saturday. The Dolphins were short on players, so thanks to Bennett “Punchy” Hill and “The Korean Cannonball” Jason Kim for offering to turn their jerseys inside out and help the opposition. As always, the boys turned in a great effort and it was probably their best defensive game of the year; constantly pressuring the opposition ball runners and really making it tough for them to score. It was (almost literally) a marathon effort from Connor “Archimedes” Drysdale, as he continues to shun his namesake’s theory that the closest distance between two points is in a straight line; his patented “circular possession” regularly bamboozling the opposition as well as his own coaching staff. However, there was one particular standout, as Player of the Day honours went to “Fast Twitch” Caelan Fitch. Quite frankly at the end of the game, I didn’t know whether to shake his hand or drug test him, because he was in absolutely everything. He was a workhorse in attack and nothing short of dominant in defence; sprinting off his line and cutting the momentum of the opposition before they could even get started.
This week’s game against the Coomera Crushers saw another big improvement in the team’s performance. It was great to see a lot more player involvement in the play with all the boys having an opportunity to run the ball. This week’s player of the match was Kai Salam. Besides scoring an excellent try in the game, he has shown great enthusiasm at team training.
Well done Kai!
Continuing their CFMEU-approved playing schedule of “one week on; one week off”, a well-rested U8 White travelled to Fremar Park to tackle a Surfers Paradise Dolphins teams. Head Coach Gerard Brierley returned from a week off in Canberra, and while his strategy and tactics were on song, his taste in socks clearly has not improved during the break (who knew there was a chocolate Mr Whippy emoji?). Assistant Coach Phil Mazey was unfortunately away due to a last minute engagement, so thanks to Adam Twemlow for running the subs during my absence on U6 duty. Word on the street is the boys played a huge first half, but tired late and got over-run toward the end. That said, it was a great team effort from the boys, with just some of the coach’s observations below:
But the Player of the Day honours went to “The Excavator” Ryosei Komatsu, for another huge game and courageous effort at fullback. While he may not the tallest or the biggest on the team, he’s got to just about be the toughest. He never takes a backward step in defence; copping the big hits in his stride and bravely getting back into position as if to say, “Please Sir, I want some more!”. This week sees us playing back at home against Coomera Crushers Orange. Game time is scheduled at this stage for 8:20am, but I’ll let you know if that changes.
The opposition coach started the banter before game saying he expected to be constantly walking back from his try line. I hate to say it – but his cocky comment proved true!
A very well drilled, fluid Surfers Yellow team took the field and out-played us in almost all areas of the game.
They were fast, they were hungry and there was no time for napping.
With a score of 8 tries to 1 at half time, it was looking like the battle was already won, BUT…
Our boys never gave up! They didn’t once drop their heads or give up the fight.
Timmy’s red face and swollen cheek told the story of how much hard work he put into the game – running, tackling, cleaning out.
Kaelan was always hot on his heels.
The backs showed glimpses of brilliance and executed some of their practised moves with skill and precision.
In the second half, Tristan scored a well-deserved try, as did James and of course, the speedy wheels (William).
It was a game of lessons learnt and more practise to be done.
Final Score: Surfers Yellow 75 def TSS Red 20
This week the boys met up with Surfers Dolphins Yellow at their home ground, who were undefeated so far this season. Despite a larger opposition, little ball possession and no reserves the boys hung in for a very absorbing game. Two great tries late in the games saw them trailing 19 – 20 with a minute to go. Unfortunately, the play didn’t go their way and the final result was 19 – 25. Well done boys on a very gutsy effort!
Well done to Heanen who participated in the National Street Dance Championships in Melbourne on Saturday 27 May. Heanen who is 8 Years old and in Year 3 competed against boys who are 12 years and younger. In the Solo event, Heanen came 2nd. Well done this is a great achievement.
Krissh participated in the ATA Taekwon-Do National Champs in the Micro weight division and came 3rd. Well done Krissh that is a great achievement.
