TSS Outclassed by Top of the Table BGS Squad

Mr Nick Walton, Tennis Manager

After weeks of wet weather and no GPS matchplay, the TSS boys were keen to hit the courts against an always classy BGS side. The day started with our Year 7s finding themselves challenged, a position they had not been in for the last two years remaining undefeated. In the 7A’s, Lennox Boles and Ari Hunt got off to a flying start in their first doubles taking all of the first four games. However, their opponents clawed their way back into the match and were ultimately more consistent on the big points. Jason Edlinger and Petr Soukup put on a clinic against the BGS number 2 doubles pair picking up a 6-2 win.  Petr and Ari Hunt both put in an amazing effort in their singles engaging in multiple long rallies but unfortunately finished just short. The 7A’s did very well considering their opposition had two boys ranked in the top 5 in the country for their age and more than capable of playing in a first IV lineup. The 7B’s recorded an outstanding 39-28 victory. Well done to Tom Edlinger and Lachlan Cleverly for winning both their doubles in convincing fashion. Congratulations go to Ben Stoebel and Max Dewhurst for convincing doubles wins, Hunter Hampton and Jefferson McCarthy winning both their singles and doubles matches, and finally to Tom Rodgers and David Yu putting in a herculean effort in doubles, with a match lasting 90 minute!

The Second IV carried the efforts of the 7s through to their own doubles, but unfortunately loosing both doubles, with the #2 pairing of Andrew Woo & Tom Ramsey loosing in 3 tantalizing sets, 6/7, 6/1, 8/10. Going into singles play, Kenan Little & Buddy Holley started off extremely strong, demolishing their opponents at the #1 & #2 positions loosing only 2 games each in their matches. It then came down to Tom Ramsey to seal the deal, and he fell agonizingly short, loosing in a 3 set battle, 6/4, 1/6, 2/6 to hand a 4-2 match win to BGS.

The TSS First IV knew what they were up against this weekend and relished the opportunity to play the toughest team in the competition on their home courts.  TSS #1 player Timothy Yeung Packer came out firing, matching it with the BGS #1 but couldn’t capitalise on his opportunities in the first set, before going down 6/4 6/0.  Wylie Bucknell, Kosta Karathanasopoulos and Ethan Carrick all showed glimpses of brilliance throughout their matches, but the consistency from the BGS boys proved to be the difference, with their singles scores being 6/1 6/1, 6/2 6/3 and 6/0 6/1 respectively.

TSS took a while to get going on both courts in the doubles, going down 6/3 and 6/2 before Timothy Yeung Packer and Wylie Bucknell came back to win the second set 6/2.  Ethan Carrick and Kosta Karathanasopoulos also started the second set of their double positively, going up 3/0 before they were reeled back by BGS and eventually dropped the set 6/4.  Unfortunately Timmy and Wylie fell agonisingly close in the super tie breaker, losing 10-8.

This coming Saturday TSS faces another challenge against a Brisbane State High Team that has only lost 1 match this season.  The First IV will be ready!
