Mr Andrew Hawkins – Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School
This time last year we finished academic work at the end of Week 4 and began a new academic year in Week 5. Yes, one weekend separated an academic year! This was very hard for staff and students to make the adjustment. For 2019, we decided that IDEALS Week would make for a suitable break between academic changeover periods. Generally speaking we have Year 7s on an alternative program, we have Army and Air Force Cadets on Adventure Camp at the Sunshine Coast, Navy Cadets on Stradbroke Island, Year 10s on their extended Outward Bound Camp in Northern NSW or China, and Years 11 and 12 on Exam Block.
Hopefully this week will be a week of limited technology for most senior TSS students. IDEALS Week coincides with major system and device updates that usually occur from September to October. During this period you need to ensure all of your devices and apps settings are updated, particularly if your devices are set-up as a family group. This will help protect your privacy and security. However, be mindful you will need to check for changes in system settings.
A couple of points we give the younger years to remember for updating:
– Charge your device before updating
– Make sure you are connected to wifi
– Get help from your parents to install
Apps are a little bit like fashion items where they come and go pretty quickly. One App that continues to gain momentum is Tik Tok. I thought it might be a good opportunity with most of your sons away on camp to give you a little information on the App if you are unfamiliar with it.
Tik Tok is a video community that allows users to create, share, and discover short lip-synced music videos up to 15 seconds. Tik Tok is intended for users aged 13 and over. Tik Tok will block accounts once they become aware of underage use. Be aware contents of videos may reveal your location, i.e. your school uniform, home and address. Also a user may be exposed to inappropriate content in videos and in other peoples’ posts. Make sure your son’s profile is edited to remove personal details. You can increase their privacy in settings, by making their account private and by changing comments and duet to settings to ‘friends’ or ‘off ‘. You can report content and block users by selecting either the video or profile, select the three dots in the corner and fill out the block or report form from the app.
