Term 4 Sailing

Mr Nicholas Stansbie – Sailing Manager

Term 4 has seen a busy sailing program getting underway for the summer season, with over 70 boys each week taking part in training.  There is now sailing happening 7 days a week at the TSS boat shed!

On Sunday this week, our Racing Team made our first trip to Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for the season.  We took 11 boats in total, and 22 sailors, including 2 girls from St Hilda’s!  We competed against a number of other schools including Iona College, Brisbane Grammar School, Ormiston College and Lourdes Hill College.  Of the five races that occurred, TSS boys were successful in all of them, with the team of Angus Wheatley & Max Dewhurst winning three and the combination of Blake Wilson & Zach Miller-Wright winning the other two.    The combinations of Lachlan Wheatley & Harry Hogan, Charlie Hart & Ryan Hebdon and Lachlan Free & Jake Scott, also placed well with consistent top ten finishes, in a field of  41 boats.   Most pleasingly of all, there were a number of less experienced boys skippering for the first time, being mentored by their more experienced crew, which bodes extremely well for the future.

As Term 4 approaches the end, it should also be noted that numbers continue to be strong in the Start Sailing and Better Sailing groups.  These boys have a regatta at school next Sunday at 9am and we look forward to seeing a large participation rate as these boys look to put the skills they have learned in training into practice in a racing context.
