Mr Jaye Beutel – Thorold Housemaster
I am incredibly proud and honoured to have become a part of the Thorold Family for 2018 as the Assistant Housemaster. For those of you who have not met me before I moved out to the Gold Coast from (not so sunny) Reading in England in September 2014, having taught for 4 years in a local state Secondary School. I joined TSS in 2015 as a member of the Maths department as a full-time Maths teacher and have been there since. Outside of the classroom I have assisted in the TSS Football (Soccer) programme, running game days and working as a coach and Age Group Manager. In 2017 I moved into Boarding as a Resident Master in McKinley where I spent a year “learning the ropes” and understanding what a remarkable culture and programme TSS Boarding has to offer. When I’m not in school I am an avid football player as a goalkeeper for Burleigh Heads and I also am an actor in a few Amateur Theatre Companies. This coming April/May (27th – 13th) , I will be Sherlock in the Spotlight Theatre Company production of the same name.
Whilst these last 2 weeks have gone by in a flash I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far here in Thorold and getting to know all the boys. The atmosphere in the house has been excellent and I thank each and every boy and parent for welcoming me from across the road. I am incredibly excited to work with Mr. Beutel and all the other staff and I look forward to meeting you all in person at the welcome house chapel service.
I’m Ann Duncan and have been appointed Matron of Thorold House. I hope to make the Matron’s room into a meeting room just like the kitchen at home. I want the boys to be able to come and ask for thing to be done just as if they were at home. Being a mother myself I realize how hard it is to send your boys to TSS and I want them to be comfortable and happy so they can achieve their dreams. I always wanted a large family, I’ve been blessed with a daughter and I now have more ‘sons’ than I could of dreamed. We are a new team at Thorold House, with only the well being of your sons at heart. I hope 2018 will be a great year for us all.
My name is Simon Cusden. Originally from the UK, I settled in Australia in 2007. A former first – class cricketer and experienced coach, I have worked around the world with boys and girls of all ages. I am former Director of Cricket at Knox Grammar School, I have also spent periods of time speaking in schools on the current issues of mental health and self-awareness.
I am passionate about personal growth, making a difference and the importance of honesty and positive relationships as a tool for a health and balanced life. My personal philosophy is one of gratitude for the opportunities we are given, honesty in our words and actions, and a deep curiosity as to how we can give more to the world around us, without sacrificing ourselves in the due course. We cannot fill a bucket from an empty well!
I have lived away from home for a long time now, I understand the need for the safety and love that a home provides. I have been fortunate enough to be nurtured and challenged at the same time on my travels by friends, family and work places.
I am looking forward to joining the Thorold House and getting stuck into school life, sharing ideas, a few laughs and building inspiring and honest relationships with the TSS community.
My name is Danny Marshall. Originally from the North East of England, I’m really happy to be moving to Australia and becoming part of the TSS community, particularly Thorold House. Looks as if it is going to be a big year for us all. Coming from a competitive swimming background where I achieved national success at a young age, I have been working for the last 3 years as a Swimming Coach/ Teacher and Lifeguard.
I am looking forward to experiencing the differences between the British and Australian lifestyles and cultures. Lots of sunshine will certainly make a nice change too!
I can’t wait to meet you all and hope that the next 12 months will be as exciting for you as I believe it will be for me.
Hello parents and friends of Thorold House, my name is James Blok and I am a new Resident Master here in Thorold House. I am an old boy of TSS graduating in 2016 from Biddle House ( Try not and hold that against me). I am currently studying accounting and commerce at Bond University. I am also involved in the logistics industry, with further aspirations of being in international supply chains later in life. Home for me is a town by the name of Lismore in Northern NSW, I also have two younger brothers still here at TSS in grade nine and eleven.
I look forward to meeting you all as the year progresses.
Max is a new boy to Thorold House and TSS, joining us from Castle Hill. It has been a busy few weeks for Max as he settles into his new surrounds, gets normalised to crazy wake ups for rowing and making new friends and mate here in the House and at TSS. During his free time though he demonstrates great skill in the operation of his impressive drone. Here is just one clip he has shared with us recently, as he tours the School from 70+ metres in the air. Great job Max, can’t wait to see what footage comes next!
