Stephen Eardley – Head of Department Visual Art
The Year 10 Visual Art students recently had an opportunity to visit HOTA Gallery – Gold Coast. The main purpose was to immerse themselves in diverse examples of excellence on display at ENERGIES 2021. ENERGIES recognises and celebrates the artistic achievements and creative talents of senior high school students with the exhibition showcasing the work of the 30 works of excellence selected in 2021 from the Gold Coast regional secondary schools.
This work is inspirational and aspirational for students to see the standard of artmaking and a diverse range and use of media and concept. The Year 10 Visual Art students were charged with the task of selecting one work in the exhibition to analyse and return to the classroom to write an edited critique, against a posed question. This helps students recognize that they are not only artist but audience in their engagement with artwork of others and their own making. It also helps prepare them for writing against criteria and in test format for later in the course.
The students gain enormous insight by engaging as audience in front of the original artwork and by learning how to use the pause button on judgement to gather information and create a fuller understanding of the artist’s intention and method of visual communication.
