Miss Caitlin Anderson – Wellbeing Health Promotion Officer
Our recent Wellbeing Health assessment, Life-Fit, revealed that this years’ grade 7 students are not meeting their recommended daily vegetable or water intake, and are in fact below the national average.
While this has been on the radar of our Wellbeing Health Team, and previously acknowledged by our amazing teaching staff, we now have evidence to support new interventions.
In collaboration with and support from Year 7 Co-ordinator Mr Jackson Elliott along with our dedicated Year 7 teachers, we are excited to be introducing Crunch&Sip to all Year 7 classrooms this term. This initiative will play an important role for your son in developing his healthy eating habits and reducing his risk of chronic disease and illness later in life.
What does this mean?
Each day your son will take part in a 10-minute healthy eating break which is built into the Year 7 program.
What can my son bring for Crunch&Sip break?
We ask that you pack fresh fruit and/or vegetables and a water bottle. ‘Crunch’ places emphasis on vegetable consumption as this is the most under consumed food group among our boys. To keep things appealing, try packing a fresh dip such as hummus, guacamole, sweet potato, roasted capsicum or tsatziki to pair with carrot, celery or capsicum sticks, beans, edamame beans, snow peas, corn cob or cauliflower and broccoli florets. Whole fruits, such as apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes, mandarins; or chopped fruit, such as pineapple, papaya, rockmelon or watermelon, are also great options. You will also need to provide your son with a drink bottle each day for the ‘Sip’ component.
We understand that sometimes fresh is not always possible. On the rare occasion, dried fruit or diced fruit in natural juice is allowed. Always aim to pack fruit and vegetables as close to their natural, whole state as possible.
You can find more information around ‘what to pack’ on Prep Book. Please do not hesitate to contact your son’s classroom teacher or myself ([email protected]) if you have any further questions or concerns.
We thank you for your support!
