Year 9 ‘Immunologists’… Gram Stain Testing

By Daniel Saw – Melbourne Housemaster

If your doctor suspects you have an infection they may order a culture and gram stain to check for bacteria. If bacteria are present, this test can also help your doctor learn if the bacteria are gram negative or gram positive. The difference between gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria can affect their recommended treatment plan.

This is normally a procedure learnt by first year University Biology students, however a number of Year 9 classes took up the challenge to learn this very technical microbiology technique. As the photos indicate the boys demonstrated outstanding precision and accuracy to classify a range of bacterial cultures.
