On 8 August 2025, The Southport School proudly marked a solemn and significant milestone with the official opening of the Memorial for the Fallen, a heartfelt tribute dedicated to honouring the brave Old Boys who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
The Memorial, situated in the serene grounds of the Senior School, stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance and respect, ensuring that the legacy and courage of these young men continue to inspire generations to come.
The official opening ceremony was attended by students, staff, and distinguished guests. Central to the event was the keynote address by Dr Brendan Nelson AO, former Australian Minister for Defence and Director of the Australian War Memorial, whose profound words resonated deeply with all present.
Dr Nelson spoke eloquently about the importance of remembrance, the enduring sacrifices made by service members, and the vital role institutions like The Southport School play in keeping the memory of the fallen alive. His message reinforced the significance of the Memorial as a place not only for mourning but also for education and inspiration.
The Memorial for the Fallen features thoughtfully designed plaques that honour the 52 Old Boys who lost their lives in WWI. It offers a dedicated space where reflection and remembrance can be observed in quiet dignity.
The Southport School invites all members of its community and the wider public to visit the Memorial for the Fallen. The school remains steadfast in fostering a culture of respect, reflection, and remembrance, nurturing young men who understand the value of service and sacrifice.
