Cross Country

Cross Country at TSS has a rich and adventurous history dating back to the early 1900s. Originally known as the “Point to Point Race,” the event began in 1902 and saw students running through bushland and mangrove swamps surrounding the Nerang River, finishing behind Biddle House.

By 1904, the race had become a popular and much-anticipated challenge among students, renowned for its rugged terrain and natural obstacles.

In 1909, Headmaster Horace Dixon cleared land near the boat shed to establish a dedicated sports ground. That same year, the event evolved into an annual tradition with the introduction of the Wallaby Cup.

From 1971, TSS joined the GPS Cross Country competition, with the prestigious Jack Ross Trophy awarded to the Champion School. TSS has claimed the Jack Ross Trophy once, in 1990.

Over the years, The Southport School Cross Country program has produced a remarkable group of athletes who began their sporting journeys on these very tracks. Many have gone on to achieve national and international success across a range of disciplines:

  • Courtney Atkinson – Olympic triathlete and multiple-time Australian multisport champion
  • Shannon Eckstein – One of Australia’s most decorated Ironman competitors in surf lifesaving
  • Jack Doohan – International motorsport driver and son of MotoGP legend Mick Doohan
  • Tyler Butterfield – Professional triathlete and Olympic representative for Bermuda
  • Caleb Brown – Australian U21 rugby representative
  • John Polson – Founder of Black Sheep Apparel and successful entrepreneur
